WTC Crawl MK2

Stanlar wrote...

uhmmm .. "hanging" is the only way to describe the aftermath of the WTC Crawl MK2 ..

The evening started off with a 100 yard sprint for the usual mode of drinking transport (The Number 10 Bus) ... Literally having to flag it down as it pulled away from the buzzstop ..

The original plan being to get the buzz and head to Baker Street (which is over at the other side of Gloucester), Claude, however (and surprisingly with his gargantuan feet) somehow managed to miss the buzz and was late on parade. This probably did us a favour though, as Baker Street is a bit of a shit hole (or was last time I visited it) .. which meant we decided to meet Claude (who in fact is called Alan ... ) in the Northend Vaults.

Northend Vaults

This place has seen better days, but Jugz put some old favourites on the jukebox .. The Jam and The Clash ... and just as Claude (a.k.a Martin, a.k.a Alan, a.k.a Allan) turned up, the sounds of Stiff Little Fingers were being blasted out .. The tunes and the banter between the lads made the atmosphere in the pub pretty good, until some of the other regulars there decided to put, what can only be described as "X Factor like shite" on the jukebox instead .. Anyway, enough of that drinks finished and off to the next pub .. Golfy, Golfy what's the plan ..

Sod Baker Street and the Tall Ships, too far to walk ..

A quick trip down towards Kingsholm to the place affectionately known as "The Jockey" (The Kingsholm Inn), decent boozer to be honest, and they even did "fhree Carling" ..  Myself and Claude enlightened the other lads to the "spot of bother" that occurred in the Wagon last Saturday .. and the "haymakers" being swung around in the bar ..

The Jockey

Anyway from there the crawl continued via the Cathedral to the Dick Whittington.

The Dick

This place used to be heaving at one time, but seems to have died a bit of a death since the demise of K.C's. Still having said that the Dick Whit is a decent boozer, shame about the lack of punters in there .. maybe it does a decent lunchtime or weekend trade ? Well pub number 4 is now calling .. so a quick two minute walk up Westgate Street led us to The Union, and the Gloucester equivalent of the karaoke night at the Salisbury (Chelt ..) ..

The Union

The Union is a decent enough boozer .. but the karaoke night isn't a patch on the karaoke night at The Salisbury .. still the pub itself is decent enough .. but yet another Gloucester pub that struggles for custom on a Thursday ..

Pints dispatched and a quick jaunt through Bull Lane and a stop at The Cross Keys, we've done this place before on the WTC Crawl MK1 and it proved to be a decent Thursday evening boozer (and one of the busier places in Gloucester .. ).

The Cross Keys Inn

The thoughts of ever getting to the Water Poet afterwards seemed to evaporate after about the 3rd pint the Cross Keys  .. Thursday night at the Cross Keys tends to mean a band of some description, and Eric the Yank (or whatever he was called .. ), managed (by request) to play pretty much everything we asked for .. although Claude had to leave the premises when a rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" was being played .. obviously not one of Claude's favourites ..

Getting the 8th pint of the evening down proved too much for my liver, and Claude (being a well known alcoholic) had to help out in dispatching this pint for me .. Golfy soldiered on though and struggled through his pint, opening the gap between me and him at the top of the WTC leader board even further .. (although Golfy foolishly has booked himself a weeks holiday at the end of November .. he'll miss out on at least one WTC Thurs night out .. which means the top spot is still up for grabs) ...

After Claude (a.k.a Martin, a.k.a. Alan, a.k.a Allan. a.k.a Eric Clapton) amazed his with his guitar skills .. the usual post pub junk food trip was needed before getting a cab and heading off for some kip .. (although Golfy decided he was in need of Pizza and a walk home to walk of the effects of the extra lager he'd had ..) ..

The usual quality night out and there was mention of the WTC Crawl MK3 (Cheltenham) next week .. so Golfy, Golfy .. what's the plan ..  ?

Thursday the 28th October (Week 44)

Right Lads - we're on the home straight...

So there are officially 9 weeks left of the year and we have 16 pubs still to get visited.  Naturally one of those 9 weeks will be allocated to the WTC Christmas do, which this year (being our inaugural year) will be held at the Wagon & Horses from 6pm on Thursday December the 23rd for food and then on the number 10 bus to Cheltenham for a tour of the top end of town culminating in the winning pub, which currently is the Salisbury. Of course this is subject to change should we find a better pub, but right now, that's looking unlikely.

The following week Thursday the 30th December, hopefully the majority of you will be on holiday and I would suggest a get together in your finest christmas jumpers at probably the Wagon to hold our first proper AGM and plan next years shenanigans - which I'm sure will be more of the same only with better organisation.

However, there's a little ways to go before we reach the 23rd and the 30th and of course that only leaves us with 8 weeks including tomorrow.

1
Baker Street Gloucester
6
Dick Whittington Gloucester
11
Five Alls Cheltenham
18
Northend Vaults Gloucester
20
O'Neils Cheltenham
23
Ridge & Furrow Barnwood
27
Sloanes Gloucester
31
Tall Ship Gloucester
37
The Bat and Ball Churchdown
39
The Bell Shurdington
42
The Double Gloucester Gloucester
45
The Jockey Kingsholm
48
The Somerset Arms Cheltenham
49
The Union Gloucester
50
The Water Poet Gloucester
51
The Wheatstone Inn Gloucester

In theory this is two pubs a week. Like that's going to happen ... so ...I'd sugest a Cheltenham Crawl and a Gloucester crawl followed by some mopping up of the stragglers...

Gloucester - Baker Street, Dick Whit, Tall Ship, The Union, Northend Vaults, The Jockey & The Water Poet
Cheltenham - Five Alls, O'Niels, The Somerset Arms
Stragglers - Ridge & Furrow, The Bat & Ball, The Bell, The Double Gloucester, The Wheatstone Inn

I'm sure we have some generic agreement, and I'm suggesting we trying and get the Gloucester run out of the way tomorrow. It's a big ask lads, but you're men aren't ya?

The number 10 to Gloucester to get as close to Baker Street as possible and starting there....
Along Southgate street to The Tall Ship (early enough that they'll still be open).
Across the docks and out past the police station to the lower end of Westgate street and the Dick Whittington.
Up Westgate street to the Union.
Onto Eastgate Street and the Water Poet.
Northbound via the Market place to the Northend Vaults
...and finally Worcester street and Kingsholm road to the Jockey.

Who's in ?

Week 43 and Plans for Thursday the 28th (Week 44)

Stanlar wrote....

Well the planned  "WTC crawl MK2" for week 43 didn't happen (some say this was due to Golfy's usual poor admin .. ) and coupled with that Jugs desire to remain local .. it looked like yet another evening at the "old favourite" (i.e. The Wagon) .. Personally I think we've done this place to death and wanted to give it a miss, so after investigating a couple of other local options (The Ridge and Furrow .. local but a pain in the arse to get to, and The Double Gloucester .. local, but only for Golfy), we decided to visit what was the "old" local .. The Royal Oak, Hucclecote.

The Royal Oak was at one point a fairly decent boozer when it was managed by Dennis (a Jethro tribute act) and before him Pete (now at the Norwood), but it has since gone through various managers and has not really been as good since. This was proven by a question from the barstaff "were we staying for the quiz", to which the answer was "yes". Only to find out later the quiz was off, as in fact we were the only people who wanted to enter it ,.. (and probably at that point the only people left in the pub). Rod and Golfy sampled some of the food at The Oak .. Rod the over done scampi and chips (deep fried to death) and Golfy the Cheeseburger and Chips (apart from the salad, which had seen better days ... it didn't look too bad).

Anyway apart from the pub and the food, the usual banter ensued, and there was some talk of resurrecting the WTC Crawl MK2  ? ... but as usual .. Golfy's poor admin has let us down on that front and this has not been mentioned since ..

So Golfy, Golfy .. what's the suggested plan for this week .. ?

Week 43 Fail

As I mentioned last week, the end of the year is in sight and yet the end of the list of pubs isn't. Not being ones to make life easy for ourselves, we carried on as usual and faithfully failed to knock anything like a hole of substance in the remaining targets.

We did however well and truly demolish the Royal Oak from the list. This used to be our regular every week pub, but times change. There was a landlord here who was a good sport, told the worst jokes, was a buffoon on the golf course and actually a pleasure to be around (once you got to know him). Stupidly things didn't work out for him and since his departure things haven't worked out for the Oak either. The 'spending money' patrons migrated up the road to the Wagon & Horses and for whatever reasons they haven't been enticed back. The result is the embarrassing situation they were faced with last night, when they actually cancelled the pub quiz on the basis that we, as the only team playing, would have won our own quiz contributions.

A pointless exercise, I'm sure you'd agree.

Next week the official 2nd WTC Pub Crawl of 2010!

The WTC Crawl (Week 42)

It’s getting late in the year now. We’re into week 42. That means we have an absolute maximum of 10 weeks left. Of course in reality we won’t have anything like 10 weeks, so something has to be done. As you may have seen else where it emerged yesterday that we still have 30 pubs on our list to get visited.... A conundrum.

Not that difficult to deal with for men of our ability though and so we came up with a cracking plan. The WTC Crawl!! This involves visiting as many of these establishments as possible in one night. Now, that is a little reckless it’s true. So to be a little more sensible, lets just stick to four or five and make them one’s that are in fairly close proximity to each other.

After 20 seconds deliberation the chosen boozers were: England’s Glory, Baker Street, The Tall Ship, Robert Raikes’ House & Cafe Rene. All well and good, but things didn’t go exactly to plan.
First job is getting to “England’s Glory” using our favourite method of transport - the Number 10 bus. Simple. England’s Glory is a very nice suburban pub who’s main draw is skittle’s.

The Alley out the back (ooo errr missus) is actually two alley’s and on most Thursday’s is full of rowdy skittler’s playing skittles. This particular Thursday though, the place was dead. Hardly a soul in sight. A nice cosy pub, with a good pub-grub menu, but at 3quid a pint for Carlsberg, the beer is very overpriced.

Sadly, Rodder’s wasn’t with us, but as chief taster of the fish & chips, we did manage to collect the menus for him. Here’s the one from the Glory.

Regular readers will be aware that there was no WTC last week due to the Smithy Open being played on the next day. One of the outcomes of that event was a prize for Claude, who had to nip off in a hurry to go mountaineering for old folks... what you and I would call rambling. Anyway, Stan brought Claude’s winnings along this evening, and this served as both an entertaining way to take pictures and as a defensive weapon should Claude have been set upon by any unruly types during our journey.

So that was the first pub. On our way here we had noticed that The York (just next door) had re-opened, and not be fella’s to pass up an opportunity for a drink, we decided we’d nip in and sample the larger here.

Not a bad little boozer. Friendly staff and nice beer at a reasonable price. One would imagine the beer prices will make for some proper competition with the neighbours. We noted that Triple has a second job, filtering Stella Artois. Now, we all knew he did it, we just didn’t know it was advertised. Stan also educated us in the ways of the modern english language with the new word “Poogle”. This means: “To sit on the bog and surf the Internet”. Awesomeness.

Two down... where next?? Ah, so the plan to go all the way across town to “Baker Street” actually isn’t such a good plan. If anything we should have started that side and worked our way back, but never mind. We are fairly grown-up, and we can deal with such obstacles in our path to drinking enjoyment. On that basis... Varsity.

Like all Varsity’s across the country, it’s a student pub. The name comes from thse two words Var and Sity, meaning “to be a drunken student wasting your student loan in the pub”. It’s heavily into the social network scene with a facebook page and a twitter account and god knows what else. Watered down and over priced best describes the place. Oh and on a Thursday.... Dead.

So we’re still vaguely trying to get in the direction of the docks if for no other reason than to knock the “Tall Ship” off the list. On the way through the middle of town, a quick stop at a cashpoint made us stumble upon the “Cross Keys Inn” down exactly the sort of back alley that Claude may get mugged in. However, he’s got his golfing trophy to defend us all with, so undeterred we figured we’d give it a go...

To our surprise and delight, Thursday night in here is “Live Music Night”. There was a band and about 7 people stood around watching them. We hung out, partook of a pint, and help to boost the numbers for a couple of songs. Actually a decent pub as it goes. Music is it’s thing with “Open Mic” on Wednesdays, Friday & Saturday DJ sets and Sunday Karaoke. Beer wasn’t too bad, although by this point in the evening, it starts to taste like the last one tasted. Nice....

Next!

Onwards down Southgate street and the beautifully restored “Robert Raike’s House”. This pub is stunning. The Oak beams and slabbed floors make for a really great pub and we had a fascinating conversation with the staff.

It turns out that it wasn’t restored by English Heritage, The local Council, a Government Grant or the National Lottery Fund. Oh no? It was the hard work and dedication of one man - the owner of the Samuel Smith’s Brewery, Mr Humphrey Smith. We owe him a debt of gratitude, if only more people were aware of the finished product which looks fantastic. Four and half million quid well spent Mr Smith.

Ever onwards, we doffed our caps to the nice Canadian lady, and left a practically empty folly in search of the elusive Tall Ship. But wait!! What madness is this?? It’s 10.30 and it’s shut!!! WTF!?!?!

Well, this is a disaster. We’ve come all this way, had planned a game of pool, and have even worked up a good thirst. What are we to do?

Luckily, just across the road, is the Whitesmiths Arms. That’ll do. One in there.

Unfortunately, the pool table was busy. The place was packed for a Thursday down this end of town, with at least 5 or maybe even 7 people crowded round their pints. We did however manage to donate some loose change to the RNLI and fix the sinking boat at the same time.

Well, it’s getting late. Time to move on. So our last pub of the evening is Cafe Rene. This place stays open all night it seems. We had a beer. I remember that much... hmmm.. and I vaguely remember Stan trying to dump his beer too.... all getting a bit fuzzy from here on in though.

You what we need? Pizza & a Taxi!... Without a shadow of a doubt the best pizza of all time was had while waiting for the taxi. Now that I do remember.

Night all...
